MILESTONES
LIONS INTERNATIONAL
The History of Lions begins in 1917 when our founder Melvin Jones started the first club in Chicago, Illinois, USA. One year later it became an international organization when Canada became involved. The Border City Lions Club of Windsor, Ontario received a Charter. Lions International now comprises of 1.3 members in 202 countries and geographic areas of the world. We are the largest service club on the globe. Our Club Lake Windermere District Lions Club received its Charter in 1951. In the past years we have served the Upper Columbia Valley with one of our charter members still serving in the club. In 1955 we acquired our property at the crossroads along Highway 93/95, which has seem many uses and events including Christmas Tree lease, rodeos, race track for both cars and horse drawn wagons, model airplane flying, campground, circus just to mention a few
To-Day’s Projects:
Presently the property is home to the acclaimed Copper Point Golf Course, Chamber of Commerce Offices and Tourist Info Centre, Lions Hall and a 4 diamond Ball Park. Projects include the Golden Triangle Cycle event, Lions Golf Tournament and various functions for both the public and Lions members at the Lions Hall. The club also has incorporated the Lake Windermere District Lions Foundation, which is a registered charitable organization. A recently completed project of the foundation is the Road To Rescue – a new rescue vehicle for the valley.
2012
was another banner year with the Lake Windermere District Lions, making a very large donation the the East Kootenay Foundation for Health to finalize their drive for a Digital Mammography for the valley.
2013
made a 50k donation to the Town of Radium to upgrade their play ground equipment. Also a 14k donation to help fund the local Hospice Society
2015
COLUMBIA VALLEY ROCKIES HOCKEY TEAM
LAKE WINDERMERE DISTRICT LIONS make a $100,000 Dollar donation to aid in the purchase of a newer team bus.
